Call the authorities because everything, and I mean everything, has popped off. A few weeks ago, Rihanna’s new make-up line, FENTY BEAUTY, launched in Sephora stores and people have been losing their minds ever since. This line includes everything from a primer, to lip glosses, to foundations and highlighters. Overall, this line has received positive reviews. The most talked about products have been the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, which is available in 40 different shades, as well as the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters, which will let you to glow like a disco ball all day long.
The next thing I know, I’m in Sephora for an hour like
I thought about purchasing most of the products to test out and review. But after playing and swatching in Sephora, I decided to pick up the products that I thought were the most practical for everyday use and that suited my skin best. I purchased the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longer Foundation in 100, the single pan Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Metal Moon, and the duo pan Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal. So buckle in, it’s going to be a long review!
Let’s get started with some swatches!
Below are my full thoughts on each of the products I purchased, but I wanted to mentioned some first impressions that I had here. The foundation is quite liquidity and should be given a good shake before use. It swatches quite smooth, but isn’t super matte, despite it’s name. The highlighters are probably the stand out product for me from this line. They swatch very silky and smooth and give off a ton of pigment. Needless to say, I was very excited when I saw these in Sephora.
Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer:
This primer is described as an “oil-free primer smooths away the look of pores, visibly evens skin tone and texture, and instantly absorbs shine without feeling dry or chalky”. The packaging is beautiful! It comes in a nice weighty glass bottle with a controlled pump that contains 1.08 fl. oz of product.
I was a little hesitant to purchase this primer at first because I knew it was marketed as a mattifying primer. Usually when I know I will be wearing a matte foundation, I will opt for a more hydrating glowy primer. However, when I tried a bit of it on my hand at Sephora, it felt more like a light lotion. It doesn’t give a slippery silicone feeling as you would expect with a matte primer. So i decided to give it a try.
In terms of wear, this primer does the job! It smoothes and hydrates the skin for a nice base to apply make-up on top of. It helped my foundation to hold up all day with minimal wear off and break down. I also found that this primer helped keep my oils controlled all day. I didn’t feel the need to blot or touch up my foundation. So all in all, this primer is an A+ for us oily skinned girls.
Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation:
The first thing we need to discuss when it comes to this foundation is the whopping 40 different shades it is available in! I don’t think I have ever seen another brand launch with such a wide range of foundation shades. It’s amazing. Similar to the primer, this foundation also comes in a weighty glass bottle with a controlled pump, containing 1.08 fl. oz of product. Sephora describes it as “giving skin an instantly smooth, pore-diffused, shine-free finish that easily builds to medium to full coverage. The oil-free formula is made with climate-adaptive technology that’s resistant to sweat and humidity, and won’t clog pores so that wherever you are, it’s going to work on your skin”. Sounds like the answer to all my foundation prayers, but are the claims true?
I’ll just come out and say that I think this foundation has earned all of the hype it’s receiving from the beauty community. The formula is lightweight and can be built up without cakiness. It provides light to medium coverage with one layer, which I personally like for everyday wear. You can see from the photo on the right that some of my freckles and beauty spots are still able to peak through, which i personally like. However, if you’re someone that prefers a full coverage beat, this foundation can be built up to a solid medium to high coverage. The one caveat i will provide, is that this foundation dries quickly. I would advise to work in small sections so that you can get the application you want without having to deal with buffing spots of dried foundation.
Overall, I thought that this foundation preformed really well on my skin. It stayed put all day with minimal wear off and break down. It works really well with the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, but also applies nicely on top of some of the other primers I own as well. Again, I personally like how matte foundations look on top of hydrating primers, so my Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer also works nicely with this foundation. Since this foundation has such a quick dry time, all of my powder products applied smoothly on top.
I’ve come across some reviews that say this foundation oxidizes upon application. I would definitely agree. As you can tell from the photo above, the shade that I purchased is a bit too light for my skin. However, once the foundation dried down and I had applied the rest of my make-up, the foundation had oxidized about a shade darker and almost perfectly matched the rest of my body. So if you’re thinking of purchasing this foundation, definitely try a shade lighter.
Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters:
Well, I’ve saved the best for last. These highlighters are definitely my favourite product from the entire line and the thing I was most excited to try out. I’ve seen lots of photos floating around Instagram of people wearing one of the highlighters and just glowing to the heavens. So I knew I needed to try them. I’m happy to report that I was not disappointed. These highlighters slay my entire existence!
The Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters are described on Sephora’s website as “a cream-powder hybrid that instantly melts into skin and blends with almost zero effort”. They swatch very smooth and and a little goes a long way. You can apply these with a light hand for an everyday highlight or layer for a blinding, glow from the heavens kind of highlight.
I picked up one single pan highlighter in Metal Moon and one duo pan highlighter in Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal. Metal Moon is a mega fine white gold highlighter. As its description suggests, it does have a slight gold reflect when applied to the cheeks. However, I personally don’t think the gold too overpowering for my pale skin. Lightening Dust/ Fire Crystal is definitely my favourite of out the two highlighters that I purchased. Lightening Dust gives a soft pearlescent sheen to the skin, while Fire Crystal is a bit more intense and provides more shimmer for a supercharged pearlescent sheen. I’ve been using Lightening Dust for an everyday highlight. But when I’m feeling full glam, I’ll bust Fire Crystal out or even layer Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal on top of one another.
Lightening Dust/ Fire Crystal Metal Moon
Overall, this line is a huge hit and gets two big thumbs up from me. I think each of the products that I purchased worked well together, on their own, and with other products. I may try a few more things from the line just to see if they are up to par with the products that I’ve purchased and reviewed here. Have you tried any of Rihanna’s new FENTY BEAUTY line?
