Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipsticks Review

I’ve been super into lipsticks lately. Ever since the Fall season hit, I’ve been obsessing over lips. Nude lips, pink lips, berry lips. Just all the lips. While my lipstick collection has grown to be pretty substantial, I decided that it was time for a bit of a refresh. I purged all the old, clumpy and chunky lipsticks that have been sitting in my lipstick display for what seems like forever (don’t judge me!) and trashed some of the lipsticks that I just don’t find myself reaching for. A sad process, but a necessary one.

The silver lining in this situation is that decluttering has left me with room in my collection to buy some new fresh lipsticks. I’ve been lusting after the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipsticks for quite a while. I’ve heard and read that the formula and pigmentation of these lipsticks are top notch. I’ve swatched and played with a few of these lipsticks img_2960.jpgbefore, but always thought the shades were too brown or grey for my skin tone. However, the last time I was at Sephora, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the shades had expanded to include a few pink and red shades. So I bit the bullet and decided to finally try these out for myself.

These lipsticks  are described as “a highly comfortable, long wearing liquid lipstick that dries matte with intense color pay-off and transfer-proof properties”. Each lipstick comes in a sleek frosted plastic tube with a matte black lid and contains 0.04 oz. of product. They are cruelty-free and are formulated without parabens or gluten.

I picked up the colours Crush (top) and Trophy Wife (bottom). Crush is a a peachy nude shade that gives me a ‘my lips but better’ look. Trophy Wife is a cool berry shade with a slight brown undertone that is perfect for the fall. I’m in love with both of these shades. Crush is a great everyday nude that I have worn to work on a regular basis since I bought it. Trophy Wife has been my go-to for parties and events, allowing me to dress up super simple make-up looks.

In terms of formula, these lipsticks are some of the best I have ever tried. They are extremely pigmented and go on the lips evenly and smoothly with one application. The formula is super light and doesn’t feel goopy or thick on the lips. The lasting power is fantastic! I can easily get through an entire work day with no flaking, smearing or caking. I even got through an entire Thanksgiving dinner (including gravy!) with minimal fading. Best of all, my lips are not left feeling dry or cracked. As an added bonus, these lipsticks also have a delicious frosted cupcake smell.

Here are what Crush and Trophy Wife look like on me!

You guys, the hype is so true with these lipsticks and I am kicking myself for not purchasing them sooner. These have quickly become some of my favourite lipsticks to wear. They are easy and reliable, which are qualities I look for in any beauty product. I can definitely see myself purchasing more of these in the future.

Have you tried Huda Beauty’s Liquid Matte Lipsticks? What are your thoughts?

Affordable Fall Clothes: Joe Fresh

It’s officially Fall! My favourite time of year! While I will miss the summer, I’m definitely more of a pumpkin spice latte, vampy lip and big wool scarf kind of girl. Call me basic, but it’s the truth. Last Fall was such a busy time for me. We were in the process of moving into our new apartment and I was getting ready to start a new job. A lot of life changes, which was super stressful to say the least. As a result, I feel like I didn’t really get the chance to dive into Fall fashion the way I normally do. So this year, I’ve decided to get a bit of a head start and really go for it.

I was so happy to see that a lot of stores are having some really great sales right now. It gives me the opportunity to mix and match different pieces to make a great Fall wardrobe. Since I’m pretty much starting from scratch, I decided to focus on basics for now; a good cardigan, cute flats, and of course a huge scarf. Now if you know me, you know that my basics are usually not that basic. I love bright colours, a good pattern (especially a leopard print), and sometimes even some sparkle.

On a bit of whim, I decided to check out what Joe Fresh had come out with for the Fall. I’ve purchased a few basics from them over the years and have loved the quality and price. After scrolling through their website, I was surprised to see how many things had caught my eye! They really seem to have updated their style to become more modern. I decided to pick up a few things and share here how to go about building an affordable Fall wardrobe and where to look. Here’s what I purchased!

Essential Cardi (Bright Red)

Putting this piece in my shopping cart was a no brainer. Cardigans are a basic must for me. I can mix and match them with different tops that I already have in my wardrobe and pair them with any type of bottom for a polished look. This cardigan is super soft and is made with 60% cotton and 40% rayon. I also really love the colour. I think red really fits well with the Fall season and allows me to have the pop of colour I like to incorporate into my wardrobe.

Price: $24 CAD.

Print Boyfriend Tee (Brown)IMG_2925

This tee was another no brainer for me. I’m in love with leopard print. I think it’s such a cool pattern and can really help to dress up a casual look. This tee is 100% rayon, making it light enough to layer with a blazer or jacket on a cooler day. It has a small pocket on to top left and is a bit of a longer shirt. I can see myself wearing this on casual Fridays at the office with a pair of jeans and a jacket or on the weekend when I am out and about.

Price: $19 CAD.

Plaid Scarf (Red)IMG_2931.JPG

This purchase was easily my favourite. I love big fluffy scarves for the Fall. This scarf is perfection and I am in love. The fabric, pattern and fringe are exactly what I am looking for when adding accessories to my wardrobe. While this scarf is made from 100% acrylic, it’s super soft and feels closer to a wool/cotton blend. This piece was on the pricer side, in my opinion, but was totally worth the splurge and will be a staple in my wardrobe for Fall.

Price: $29 CAD.

Faux Suede Loafers (Tan)IMG_2934.JPG

Yes, I know. More leopard print. I can’t help myself! These loafers are just the cutest! I can see these shoes going with dress pants to spice up a work look or with a pair of jeans for a more casual weekend outfit. Although they are a little stiff and will take some breaking in, I think they fit my foot really well. These loafers are 100% synthetic faux suede.

Price: $39 CAD.

Review of Fenty Beauty by Rihanna

Call the authorities because everything, and I mean everything, has popped off. A few weeks ago, Rihanna’s new make-up line, FENTY BEAUTY, launched in Sephora stores and people have been losing their minds ever since. This line includes everything from a primer, to lip glosses, to foundations and highlighters. Overall, this line has received positive reviews. The most talked about products have been the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, which is available in 40 different shades, as well as the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters, which will let you to glow like a disco ball all day long.

The next thing I know, I’m in Sephora for an hour like

I thought about purchasing most of the products to test out and review. But after playing and swatching in Sephora, I decided to pick up the products that I thought were the most practical for everyday use and that suited my skin best. I purchased the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longer Foundation in 100, the single pan Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Metal Moon, and the duo pan Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal. So buckle in, it’s going to be a long review!

fentyswatchesLet’s get started with some swatches!

Below are my full thoughts on each of the products I purchased, but I wanted to mentioned some first impressions that I had here. The foundation is quite liquidity and should be given a good shake before use. It swatches quite smooth, but isn’t super matte, despite it’s name. The highlighters are probably the stand out product for me from this line. They swatch very silky and smooth and give off a ton of pigment. Needless to say, I was very excited when I saw these in Sephora.

Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer:

This primer is described as an “oil-free primer smooths away the look of pores, visibly evens skin tone and texture, and instantly absorbs shine without feeling dry or chalky”. The packaging is beautiful! It comes in a nice weighty glass bottle with a controlled pump that contains 1.08 fl. oz of product.

I was a little hesitant to purchase this primer at first because I knew it was marketed as a mattifying primer. Usually when I know I will be wearing a matte foundation, I will opt IMG_2883.JPGfor a more hydrating glowy primer. However, when I tried a bit of it on my hand at Sephora, it felt more like a light lotion. It doesn’t give a slippery silicone feeling as you would expect with a matte primer. So i decided to give it a try.

In terms of wear, this primer does the job! It smoothes and hydrates the skin for a nice base to apply make-up on top of. It helped my foundation to hold up all day with minimal wear off and break down. I also found that this primer helped keep my oils controlled all day. I didn’t feel the need to blot or touch up my foundation. So all in all, this primer is an A+ for us oily skinned girls.

Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation:

The first thing we need to discuss when it comes to this foundation is the whopping 40 different shades it is available in! I don’t think I have ever seen another brand launch with such a wide range of foundation shades. It’s amazing. Similar to the primer, this foundation also comes in a weighty glass bottle with a controlled pump, containing 1.08 IMG_2849fl. oz of product. Sephora describes it as “giving skin an instantly smooth, pore-diffused, shine-free finish that easily builds to medium to full coverage. The oil-free formula is made with climate-adaptive technology that’s resistant to sweat and humidity, and won’t clog pores so that wherever you are, it’s going to work on your skin”. Sounds like the answer to all my foundation prayers, but are the claims true?

I’ll just come out and say that I think this foundation has earned all of the hype it’s receiving from the beauty community. The formula is lightweight and can be built up without cakiness. It provides light to medium coverage with one layer, which I IMG_2891personally like for everyday wear. You can see from the photo on the right that some of my freckles and beauty spots are still able to peak through, which i personally like. However, if you’re someone that prefers a full coverage beat, this foundation can be built up to a solid medium to high coverage. The one caveat i will provide, is that this foundation dries quickly. I would advise to work in small sections so that you can get the application you want without having to deal with buffing spots of dried foundation.

Overall, I thought that this foundation preformed really well on my skin. It stayed put all day with minimal wear off and break down. It works really well with the Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer, but also applies nicely on top of some of the other primers I own as well. Again, I personally like how matte foundations look on top of hydrating primers, so my Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer also works nicely with this foundation. Since this foundation has such a quick dry time, all of my powder products applied smoothly on top.

I’ve come across some reviews that say this foundation oxidizes upon application. I would definitely agree. As you can tell from the photo above, the shade that I purchased is a bit too light for my skin. However, once the foundation dried down and I had applied the rest of my make-up, the foundation had oxidized about a shade darker and almost perfectly matched the rest of my body. So if you’re thinking of purchasing this foundation, definitely try a shade lighter.

Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters:

Well, I’ve saved the best for last. These highlighters are definitely my favourite product from the entire line and the thing I was most excited to try out. I’ve seen lots of photos floating around Instagram of people wearing one of the highlighters and just glowing to the heavens. So I knew I needed to try them. I’m happy to report that I was not disappointed. These highlighters slay my entire existence!

The Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters are described on Sephora’s website as “a cream-powder hybrid that instantly melts into skin and blends with almost zero effort”. They swatch very smooth and and a little goes a long way. You can apply these with a light hand for an everyday highlight or layer for a blinding, glow from the heavens kind of highlight.

I picked up one single pan highlighter in Metal Moon and one duo pan highlighter in Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal. Metal Moon is a mega fine white gold highlighter. As its description suggests, it does have a slight gold reflect when applied to the cheeks. However, I personally don’t think the gold too overpowering for my pale skin. Lightening Dust/ Fire Crystal is definitely my favourite of out the two highlighters that I purchased. Lightening Dust gives a soft pearlescent sheen to the skin, while Fire Crystal is a bit more intense and provides more shimmer for a supercharged pearlescent sheen. I’ve been using Lightening Dust for an everyday highlight. But when I’m feeling full glam, I’ll bust Fire Crystal out or even layer Lightening Dust and Fire Crystal on top of one another.

Lightening Dust/ Fire Crystal                                                             Metal Moon

Overall, this line is a huge hit and gets two big thumbs up from me. I think each of the products that I purchased worked well together, on their own, and with other products. I may try a few more things from the line just to see if they are up to par with the products that I’ve purchased and reviewed here. Have you tried any of Rihanna’s new FENTY BEAUTY line? Ciaté Glitter Flip Liquid Lipstick Review

Well, it looks as though the internet is broken again! You’re seriously going to want to stop what you’re doing and pay attention to this one. Ciaté has sent the beauty community into a literal frenzy over their most recent launch of Glitter Flip Liquid Lipsticks. This product is marketed as a metallic matte liquid lipstick that magically transforms into a glitter lip as you press your lips together. The question is, does it really work?

These liquid lipsticks are available in seven different shades, ranging from soft pinks to
bold blues. Each lipstick is $23 CAD. and contains 0.10 oz. of product. Ciaté describes these lipsticksimg_2821.jpg as having a “stay-put formulation that is non-drying and totally comfortable, and will last all night with no need for retouching”. These lipsticks are made without parabens, sulfates or phthalates, and are dermatologically tested, vegan, cruelty-free and formulated without gluten.

In terms of packaging, I think Ciaté did an amazing job. The tube is made of a sleek clear acrylic, allowing you to see what colour you’re using without opening up the tube. I also love that they put some thought behind smaller details of the packaging, such as the glittery silver lid and star details.

As you can imagine, almost all of the colours are already sold out on Sephora’s website. When I placed my order a few days ago, only Fortune (dark purple) and Iconic (black) were still available. This was actually a blessing in disguise because all of the colours in this line look really beautiful and it would have been pretty hard to choose between seven shades. I ended up ordering the colour Iconic. It applies as a matte metallic black lipstick and transforms into a glitter lip with a blue reflect when lips are pressed together.

I don’t know what kind of witchcraft Ciaté put into this product, but this actually works. No gimmick. This truly does what it says it’s going to. We’re not talking about just a few speckles of glitter either. We’re talking full-blown, disco ball, glitter lips. The more you press those lips together, the sparklier it gets.

Ciaté also did a pretty amazing job on the formula of these lipsticks as well. I ordered the darkest colour in the range and experienced no streaking or patchiness during application. After about two minutes the lipstick completely dried down and was budge proof. While it was slightly drying on the lips, this did wear all day (don’t worry I stayed inside!) and didn’t smear or flake off.

Overall, I am super impressed with this product. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen on the market and is incredibly creative and innovative. While I don’t see myself wearing this on an everyday basis, I do think it makes for a cool addition to my make-up collection and may be something I wear to a future event or even for Halloween!

L’Oréal Lash Paradise Review

It’s no secret that drugstore brands have been killing the make-up scene lately. Well, sound the horn, here comes L’Oréal to join the party. This summer, L’Oréal launched their new Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, describing it as giving “intense, volumized and more beautiful lashes”.  This mascara is available in three shades, black, blackest black, and waterproof blackest black. It comes in the cutest sleek metallic pink tube and contains the standard 0.28 fl. oz of product.

IMG_2769The internet absolutely lost its mind over this mascara when it first launched. A lot of reviewers called Lash Paradise the drugstore dupe for the Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced. I think it was this comparison that made me hesitate to buy it for so long. The Better Than Sex mascara and I are definitely not friends. It clumped up my lashes and flaked under my eyes during wear. Both of which are super unacceptable for any mascara, be it drugstore or high end. Now that I have tried both mascaras, I can say that personally I don’t think the two compare at all. Lash Paradise gave me beautiful full and fluttery lashes with just two coats. The application was mess free and did not clump up my lashes. During the day there was absolutely no flaking or smearing under the eyes and my lashes stayed voluminous and held a curl all day. The one thing I will say is that you’ll need a good eye make-up remover or an oil to get this completely off at the end of the day. This really isn’t something I mind since I usually use an oil to fully devolve all of the eye makeup I have on anyways. Plus, I love knowing this stuff is bullet proof!

IMG_2773The brush applicator has a slight hourglass shape, which I personally love. I’ve always had better luck with applicators like this and find that they give me the best lashes possible. L’Oréal describes it as a “soft wavy bristle brush that holds maximum formula for a dramatic volumizing charge. 200+ bristles catch every lash for a full fringe effect”. I think the fact that this applicator has so many bristles works in its favour. It provides an even coat of mascara and doesn’t separate or fan the lashes out too much.

IMG_2803Overall, I think this mascara is bomb. All of the hype and praise is true. This really is  drugstore mascara, at a drugstore price, with a high end formula and performance. I can rely on this product for everyday wear and not have to worry half way through a meeting if I have black all over my face. This has truly become a favourite and I will purchase it again and again.

Covergirl Melting Pout Review

I recently got my hands on some new goodies from Covergirl and I’m pretty excited about it! Their new Melting Pout Gel Liquid Lipsticks line recently launched a few months ago and included 12 shades, ranging from nudes, to bold reds, to bright purples. These IMG_2736.JPGlippies are formulated as a lipgloss/lipstick hybrid and are described by Covergirl as being “high-impact, super rich color with a lightweight, satin finish”. You can pick these up from your local drug store for about $10 CAD. (or about $7.99 USD).

This line of lipsticks was actually launched as part of Covergirl’s 2017 summer collection, but were impossible to find. I don’t know if it’s because I live in Canada and everything just takes longer to be released here or if these were just in super high demand. Either way I’m glad to have them.

These lipsticks come packaged in a squeeze tube, containing 0.27 fl. oz. of product. The packaging is a sleek and soft plastic, similar to the packaging of the Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick by Too Faced. I love that Covergirl took the time to match the colourIMG_2748 of the tube to the colour of the lipstick. This is great for when I’m in a rush and don’t have time to guess what lipstick shade the numbers correspond to. The applicator is a slanted sponge, which provides a smooth, easy and controlled application. The one thing I will say about applicators like this is that they have a tendency to become messy after a few uses. I find that the sponge starts to soak up a lot of excess product, which can be great for actual application and user error. However, too much product in the sponge can cause it to start smearing and running down the neck of the tube, causing a real mess!

The lipsticks themselves are fragrance and flavour-free, which is great for those of us that have super sensitive skin or noses. They have a creamy consistency and provide opaque, pigmented colour. These give a glossy, cream type finish without any glitter or IMG_2757shimmer. I picked up three shades, Gel-Ful (105), Evan-Gel-Ical (110), and Don’t Be Gelly (130). All three shades provided amazing pigment and applied smoothly without settling into any lip lines. Since there’s no real dry-down with these lipsticks, I was worried they might move around during they day. I’m happy to report that they stayed put and didn’t slip or feather outside of my lip line. They wore for about 6 hours (so almost a full work day!) and didn’t leave my lips feeling dehydrated or dry. The formula is quite buildable and allows for reapplication without pilling, caking or gooping. I was also quite happy to see that the brighter berry shade I purchased, Don’t Be Gelly (130), provided as much opacity as the nude shades I tried. There were no application issues or patchiness with this shade, which can sometimes be an issue with darker, more berry liquid lipsticks.

Here’s how they look on the lips!

           Gel-Ful (105)                      Even-Gel-Ical (110)               Don’t Be Gelly (130)

Overall, I’m really enjoying these lipsticks. I think they’re a great drugstore alternative if you’re on a budget (or even if you’re not!). I like that they are comfortable and don’t leave my lips feeling dry or chapped as some liquid lipsticks often do. I’ll definitely be purchasing a few more shades for the Fall and Winter months!

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Hey there! Thanks for checking out my review of Big Little Lies. I’m currently reading this book, so check back here soon for my thoughts and reactions! Better yet, why don’t you read along with me so we can compare notes!

So many of my girlfriends can’t stop talking about Big Little Lies, the TV show. I decided that I needed to see what all the fuss was about. The casting alone is super impressive and exciting; Reese Witherspoon AND Nicole Kidman…together?! Yes, please! While I’m really tempted to just start binging this show, I’m the kind of person that wants to read the book first and compare. So, here we go!

Goodreads currently has Big Little Lies rated 4.2 out of 5 stars.

Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).

Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.

New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.

Reviews and Praise

“Emotionally astute, immensely smart, and as cinematically plotted as any Tom Perrotta novel destined for critical accolades and a big-screen adaptation” – Entertainment Weekly

Perfect for vacation reading: There’s humour, suspense, a circle of appealing women” – People
